About this model

Model overview

The RDS-305 is a dual fuel range from the RDS series. It is no longer sold new, so most of the work we do on it is about keeping an installed range reliable. “Dual fuel” means two utilities feed one appliance: gas reaches the burners, and electricity runs the oven and the controls.

Two systems, two kinds of fault

That split is the first thing we use to sort a call. A burner that will not spark or sustain a flame is a gas-side question. An oven that stays cold, overshoots, or will not respond to the dial belongs to the electric side. A range that goes completely dark, burners included, usually points at the supply or a shared control board.

  • Top burners: no spark, slow ignition, lifting flame, soot on pans.
  • Oven: no heat, slow preheat, temperature far from the setting.
  • Controls: knobs that do not engage, clocks that reset, lights that flicker.

What a technician checks

On the gas side we look at burner ports, caps, igniters and the way the flame behaves once lit. On the oven side the usual suspects are the heating elements, the temperature sensor and the relays that switch them. Our guides on an oven that is not heating and on an oven running at the wrong temperature go through the symptoms owners describe.

Owner checks before the call

Check the breaker, since a dual fuel range sits on its own dedicated circuit. See that the gas valve behind the range is open. Make sure the burner caps are in place and dry, and that nothing is stored in the oven. Then write down exactly which function fails. Please do not pull the range out or open the rear panel.

If you smell gas, leave the kitchen, do not touch light switches or the appliance, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

Kitchen and installation notes

Dual fuel ranges need both a gas line and a suitable electrical connection, so a remodel or a replaced outlet can change how the range behaves. Foggy coastal mornings add moisture to kitchens that are not heavily ventilated, and that can make igniters misbehave. Tell us if the range was recently moved.

Booking

The model label is the quickest way to confirm what you own; see finding the model number. We diagnose before repairing, give a written estimate, and do nothing without your approval. More on our work is on the DCS range repair page and in the ranges guide. A related dual fuel model is the RDT-305.
