A 30-inch DCS gas range in the RGSC series, looked after by a technician who reads the model label first.
The RGSC-305BK is a 30″ gas range from the RGSC series. Owners in the city still call about keeping one running rather than replacing it. The “RGSC” part of the number tells us it is a gas range, which means every complaint starts with the gas side: burner flame, spark and oven bake.
On a 30-inch gas range that has seen years of Bay Area cooking, the calls fall into a few groups.
Cooking grease, boiled-over sauce and the damp air that comes off the Bay all find their way into burner ports and igniter tips. We look there first because it is the most common reason and the cheapest to rule in or out. Our pages on a range burner that will not ignite and on continuous clicking describe what we see.
Before booking, confirm the range has power at the outlet and the breaker has not tripped. Make sure the burner caps are seated flat and dry, and that nothing blocks the burner ports. Wipe away spilled food around the igniter with a damp cloth once the burners are cold. Do not remove the cooktop or the back panel.
If you smell gas, leave the kitchen, do not touch light switches or the appliance, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
A 30-inch freestanding or slide-in gas range depends on a correctly sized gas supply, a level footing and clear space behind and beside it. In San Francisco flats and older townhouses the gas shutoff is often hidden behind the range, which matters when we need to isolate the appliance. If the range was moved during a remodel, tell us; a disturbed connection can mimic a failing burner.
Have the model label ready; finding the model number explains where it usually sits on a range. We diagnose first, send a written estimate, and repair only what you approve. Details of the work we do on this type of appliance are on our DCS range repair page, and the wider lineup is in the DCS ranges guide. A neighbouring 30-inch model, the RGS-305, is covered separately.
Yes. The RGSC series designation identifies it as a 30-inch gas range, so the burners and the oven burn gas rather than using a separate electric element.
The spark module is usually shared across the cooktop, so it sends sparks to every igniter at once. Only the burner that is actually open to gas should catch; a weak or missing spark at one position points to that igniter or its wiring.
If the other burners work normally and there is no gas smell, many owners continue with them. Never light the dead burner with a match; turn its knob off and book a diagnosis.
The model number from the label, a short description of which burner or oven function fails, and any symptom you noticed just before it started.
