About this model

Model overview

The BGC-1236 is a DCS gas cooktop. The BGC prefix groups it with the brand’s built-in gas cooktops; read the width and burner count from the label when the technician is at the cooktop.

How a built-in gas cooktop fails

With no oven below and no display above, a cooktop is a simple appliance, and its faults are easy to describe.

  • A burner that sparks but does not catch.
  • A burner that catches, then drifts into a ragged, uneven ring.
  • All burners clicking at once after a spill.
  • A knob that no longer gives a clear click or spark at its starting position.

For the ring-shaped flame in particular, our page on uneven cooktop flames walks through what clogged ports look like.

Spills and the spark path

A boiled-over pot lets liquid run down into the burner base, where the igniter sits. Even after wiping the surface, residue under the cap can leave the spark weak or send it to the wrong place. Letting the cooktop dry completely often brings it back; if it does not, a technician needs to inspect the base.

Safe steps at home

  1. Turn all knobs off and let the surface cool.
  2. Lift the caps and heads and dry them thoroughly.
  3. Clear food from the ports with a soft brush, not a pin.
  4. Reseat everything flat and try again.

Please do not lift the cooktop out of its cut-out.

If you smell gas, leave the kitchen, do not touch light switches or the appliance, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

Installation notes

Built-in cooktops sit in a countertop opening with the gas line and power supply under the counter. The cabinet below may hold pots that crowd the connections, and a hood overhead changes flame stability. In coastal neighbourhoods, damp air can add to igniter problems.
