About this model

Model overview

At 36 inches, the CDU-365 is the wider cousin of the CDU-304 and belongs to the same CDU/CDV group. It is no longer sold new. A wider cooktop means more burner positions and a larger cut-out, so there is more room for something to go wrong, and more cabinet to work around.

Complaints from owners

Most calls fall into three areas.

  • Ignition: a burner clicks, smells faintly of gas, but does not light.
  • Flame: a ring with gaps, or a flame that leans toward one edge.
  • Controls: a knob that turns freely but gives no spark.

If the gaps in the ring sound familiar, our notes on burner flame problems show what to look for while the burner is off and cool.

Working out which burner and why

We light each burner in turn, watch the spark, and note how the flame forms before and after warming. A burner that works only after several seconds hints at a marginal igniter. One that lights and then fades suggests gas flow. Because the cooktop has one gas supply, a problem across several positions leads us toward the shared part rather than each burner.

What you can do

Turn burners off and let the cooktop cool, then lift the caps and dry them. Make sure the electrical supply is on. Do not run the unit with a cap missing, and keep towels away from the surface. A second pair of eyes helps when you photograph the burner that fails.

If you smell gas, leave the kitchen, do not touch light switches or the appliance, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

Installation and surroundings

A 36-inch cut-out needs support beneath and clear space for the gas line. Hoods installed above should be sized for the cooktop; a hood that pulls too hard can bend flames. Tall pots on wide cooktops also trap heat and can make nearby knobs hot. If your cooktop shares a countertop with a sink, note that splashes may reach the igniters.
